Ilona and Daniel at the top of a Volcano

Hello there! We are Daniel and Ilona and we travel the world together looking for adventures.

Welcome to our blog! We love swimming in waterfalls, riding camels and talking to the locals to find out about their lives and local culture. Food is a huge part of travelling and we enjoy trying out all the new and weird dishes the world has to offer. Photography is another of our passions, we can spend hours taking pictures!

Before meeting each other we already had our fair share of adventures, but we met for the first time in Turkmenistan, one of the least visited countries in the world! From there, we travelled together along the Silk Road. We crossed through Central Asia, taking in the blue-mosaic buildings in Uzbekistan and hiking through mountains in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. After exploring Xinjiang and western China, crossing the country west to east, we split up in Xian. It was a sad goodbye, but we both had different plans, with Daniel going south to Laos and Ilona north to Beijing, and South Korea later. However, travel rarely goes as planned! And Daniel got a nice surprise when she suddenly knocked on his hotel room door a few days later while he was on his way to Laos.

From there we travelled together for a few more months and explored South East Asia. We had a wonderful time there, but we had another bitter-sweet farewell when we had to part ways yet again! Ilona had to meet an old friend to travel South America, and Daniel already had plans to hike to Everest Base Camp. It took a while more until we finally got together for real, when after almost a year, we both settled down (for now!) in Frankfurt, Germany. Now we use it as a base to explore the world together. Europe is at our doorstep and we take advantage of it! But that doesn’t mean we shy away from far destinations like Japan.

Our story

We are Daniel and Ilona, a Spanish-German couple who loves travelling. The first time we met each other was in Turkmenistan, in a hotel breakfast room in Ashgabat. Daniel had started his trip in Istanbul and had just crossed over from Iran, while Ilona had just started in Ashgabat. We kept travelling together along the Silk Road, taking in the blue-mosaic buildings in Uzbekistan, hiking through mountains in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and experiencing various cultures in China. In Xian, we then split up. Daniel was going south to Laos and Ilona wanted to go north to Beijing, from where she had a flight booked to South Korea.
But travel rarely goes as planned. While exploring Beijing, Ilona realised that she’d rather continue to South East Asia with Daniel than travel through South Korea alone. Without Daniel’s knowledge, she booked a high-speed train to Kunming and, a day later, knocked on his hotel room. The look on his face was priceless!

We had a wonderful time in South East Asia. Eventually, we had to split up again because Ilona was meeting a friend in South America and Daniel wanted to hike to Everest Base Camp, but we got another chance to travel together in Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. And eventually, when we returned back to Europe, we both got jobs in Frankfurt and moved in together.
But just because we now rent an apartment in Germany doesn’t mean that our travel days are over. Whenever we can, we leave home and explore the world together. From a weekend-trip to Ireland to a three-week trip through Japan, we will keep exploring! And along the way, we want to share the beauty of the world with you. We can give you travel advise, from the best streetfood to eat in Cartagena to the travel lessons learned in 2019. Meet Ilona

My name is Ilona and I am an avid traveller from Northern Germany. While I have always loved travelling, I soon realised that my annual leave did not grant me enough freedom to see all the places I wanted to see. That is why I quit my job in May 2017 and took a plane to Turkmenistan, to begin a one-year trip around the world. I started overlanding on the Silk Road, crossing deserts and mountain passes and meeting many amazing people along the way

My goal is to share some of the highlights of my trips with you, to inspire and to show you that the world is a beautiful place with thousands of corners worth exploring. I am going to take you on journeys to well-known spots as well as off the beaten path, to big cities and remote mountain villages.

Don’t forget to subscribe so I can keep you updated about the most beautiful places in our world.
